Deep Foundation’s Rosendo Pili a.k.a. M.U.G. Shot, Christopher Guiang a.k.a. CJ, and Mark Malacapay a.k.a. ILL Poetik perform at the 2009 Bayanihan Cultural Festival.

Deep Foundation, a long-time staple in New York’s underground hip hop scene has collaborated with  Philippine Forum in launching the Hip-hop Writers’ Workshop.

It will be a series of two-hour workshops held every Friday for six months starting on June 10, at 7 p.m., at the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center.

It is open to young people between 13 and 18. Deep Foundation’s M.U.G. Shot and ILL Poetik will spearhead the workshops.

Would-be participants are requested a fee of $25 to cover a one-year membership for Philippine Forum and as a contribution for the maintenance of the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center.

“With respect to Philippine Forum’s mission of social assistance, Deep Foundation has taken up the parallel cause of educating and motivating local youth through creative expression. With the two entities tackling  poverty and social inequality through their respective mediums, the workshop will propagate cultural, social and self awareness for the younger generation,” said Rosendo Pili a.k.a. M.U.G. Shot.

The workshop also aims to prepare the participants for upcoming open mics and the Sumisigaw Youth Festival on October 22. Sumisigaw is organized by Philippine Forum and SANDIWA National Alliance of Filipino-American Youth.

Through the poetic discourse of two home-grown musicians and the stern awareness of an organization entrenched in the day-to-day community struggle, the Hip-hop Writers’ Workshop serves as a rally point, a beacon and a podium for those whom the future relies upon.

Deep Foundation, consisting of 3 emcees representing Queens and New Jersey, remains a benchmark in socially relevant hip-hop. With lyrics based on their lives and personal experiences, CeeJay, ILL Poetik and MUG Shot have given voice to an underrepresented Filipino-American demographic and sought to imbue their compatriots, both young and old, with a renewed sense of cultural pride. Deep Foundation has brought its boom-bap era-influenced hip-hop to domestic and international audiences since 2002.

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free …” Perhaps no other city in the entire United States adheres more faithfully than New York City to this passage from Emma Lazarus’s poem “The New Colossus”, engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the Statue of Liberty.
